Unfortunately, we’re not done with winter yet. Even though Indy has already seen more than its fair share of snow storms, freezing rain, and arctic temperatures, there’s likely more on the way.
Does driving in snowy or icy conditions make you nervous? If so, there are some safety precautions and driving techniques that will help you stay safe on Indianapolis roads and highways. An article called, “Checklist and Tips for Safe Winter Driving,” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises the following:
• Refill windshield washer fluid. It takes a lot of fluid to clear the slush, snow, and salt residue from the windshield. Make sure to buy the “no-freeze” fluid.
• Clear windshield and windows. Snow already reduces visibility. Ensure that the windshield and windows are clear before leaving the driveway.
• Depart early. Everyone will be driving slowly, and you may encounter lots of traffic.
• Leave extra room to stop. Slamming on the brakes often leads to sliding, so make sure to brake early.
Some conditions are too dangerous to even consider driving in. Make sure to check the advisories before venturing out.
Winter-Ready Vehicles
In addition to the recommendations above, I would also advise driving a vehicle designed for slippery conditions. After all, not all vehicles handle ice and snow equally. SUVs with four-wheel drive and extra traction are usually the best.
