National Teen Driver Safety Week

Many parents are anxious about allowing their teenagers to drive, and not all of that fear is unfounded. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just released a press release titled “NHTSA Unveils ‘Five to Drive’ Teen Safety Campaign to Reduce High Death Rate in Teens.” The article says, “Motor-vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens in America; almost half of teens killed in crashes are the drivers themselves.” This harrowing statistic sheds light on how important it is to teach young drivers good habits.

Form Good Habits

To help combat this high death, the NHTSA announced a new campaign last week called “Five to Drive.” Officials encourage parents to help their teenagers follow these five guidelines:

1. Do not use cell phone while driving.

2. Do not drive passengers.

3. Do not speed.

4. Do not drink alcohol.

5. Do wear a seatbelt.

Parents play an important role in teaching their children good driving habits. Also, remember that actions speak louder than words. Modeling the above rules in your own driving will make your teen more apt to follow them, as well.
